rescued puppies and monastery hike

Everyone thought the whining noises under the shed was kittens. By the afternoon some of the puppies had wandered out and by the next day one was already dead. Our neighbor organized a group to pull them all out from underneath, but couldn't take any home. John and I took home three and another student took two. The next day the student had to put them back by the shed, but we took those home too since they weren't looking so good. Now we had five!

Our yard was pretty popular for a few days. We advertised trying to find homes for them. We had them for exactly a week. One of them, the runt named Lucky, died before we could find homes. Sadie had never experienced death before and was pretty sad about it. We organized a puppy funeral and when we came out of our house with Lucky in a box, all the neighborhood kids had gathered around the porch to accompany us. They had collected flowers. We all walked to an empty lot and buried Lucky under a tree. We played Leias theme from Star Wars and said our goodbyes. It was pretty sad, but so heartwarming to have such great neighborhood kids.

This is a beautiful hike we've done a couple times now. It starts by a steam and climbs steeply up through an old apple orchard to a monastery. Sadie hiked all the way there and back because she got to hike with Lora, her favorite big girl in the neighborhood.
Women have to cover their heads and wear a skirt to enter the monastery....
